Nevin C. Burd, 89, of Centre Hall, died Friday, September 20, 2013 at the Hearthside Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in State College.

He was born January 31, 1924 at Coburn, a son of the late Ceden and Bulah E. Musser Burd

On June 14, 1946 he married Betty A. Schaeffer who survives at home.

Nevin graduated from East Penns Valley High School.

He served two terms in the U. S. Army during World War II, with the 4127 Army Air Forces Base Unit, earning a European Theater Ribbon; Campaign Stars for battles in Rhineland and Ardennes, a Combat Infantry Badge; ATZO and EAME Ribbons; and a good conduct medal.

Upon returning from the war Nevin worked as a stock person at McLanahans in State College, and later farmed for Dr. Neidigh and for John Patterson, then for several years worked as a bar tender at Duffy’s Tavern in Boalsburg. He then went to work at Rockview State Corrections Institution retiring after twenty eight years of service. He also built several houses and operated his own construction and home repair business.

He was faithful a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Centre Hall and was a member of the V. F. W. in State College.

He was an avid and accomplished woodworker and enjoyed building things in his shop. He also enjoyed quilting with Betty and enjoyed gardening.

In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by a daughter Brenda K. Wilt and her husband Dale Jr. of rural Spring Mills; one son Charles L. Hook and his wife Elizabeth of Liverpool; one sister, Irene Fohringer of rural Spring Mills; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by siblings, Kathryn, Grace, John, Ray, an infant, William, James, Carrie, Madeline, Marion and Beatrice.

Friends will be received from 6 – 8 pm Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA. The funeral will be at a10:00 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Trinity United Church of Christ, 104 North Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall, PA with the Rev. Audra Krise officiating. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA
