Patricia B. Shaler, of State College died on 13 May 2010, at home. She was born in Monterrey, Mexico, on 24 April 1920, daughter of Thomas DeWitt Bowman and Lillian Parker Bowman.
She married Amos J. Shaler on 27 Sept. 1943 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she was serving as a volunteer at a military hospital. She was a graduate of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Mass., of Les Fougeres in Lausanne, Switzerland, and of Penn Hall Preparatory School in Chambersburg, Pa. She also attended schools in Mexico, Chile, Hungary, and Ireland while accompanying her parents to their U.S. State Department posts. In addition to the United States and these countries, she lived in Italy, England, Belgium, and South Africa.
She is survived by daughter Louise Shaler, of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter Cynthia Shaler and son-in-law Bill Muzzy, of Boalsburg, Pa.; and son James L. Shaler and daughter-in-law Lisamarie Shaler, of Billerica, Mass. Her brother and her husband preceded her in death.
After she and Dr. Shaler moved to State College in 1953, she served on the board of United Way for ten years, as well as on the boards of the Hemlock Girl Scout Council and the Easter Seal Society. She and her husband were longtime members of Town & Gown and the Centre Hills Country Club. She was also a member of the University Women's Club, the Centre County Historical Society, the English-Speaking Union, and Friends of Schlow Library. She read extensively and was fond of gardening and traveling. She also worked with her husband in the family consulting business.
Arrangements by Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services of Centre Hall. There will be no public visitation. Private burial will be at Graysville Cemetery in Pennsylvania Furnace.
