Obituary of Richard E. Smalley, 86

Richard E. Smalley, 86, of Pleasant Gap, died Thursday, October 26, 2017, at the Hollidaysburg Veteran’s Home.

He was born April 15, 1931 in Somerset, PA, a son of the late Clyde E. and Hazel Heimbaugh Smalley. On August 27, 1955, he married Dorothy “Jean” Erzal Smalley who preceded him in death on March 2, 2016.

Richard graduated from Portage High School in 1950 and attended Williamsport Technical Institute. Mr. Smalley served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 earning the Rank of Corporal. He spent most of his working career at Cerro Metals in the Tool and Dye division, retiring in 1993.

His memberships included; St. Mark Lutheran Church in Pleasant Gap, a life member of the VFW Post 1600 in Bellefonte, a member of the American Legion Post 867 in Pleasant Gap, and was a life member of Pleasant Gap Fire Company.

Among the things he enjoyed most were hunting, fishing, and watching Penn State football games.

Surviving Mr. Smalley is one son Richard S. Smalley (Cathie) of Spring Mills; two grandchildren, Nicole Smalley (Josh), Ardell Matthew Gross, two great grandchildren Kamryn and Levi and one sister, Joan Schwartz of Florida. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Becky Smalley.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 160 N. Main St. Pleasant Gap, with the Reverend Kevin Shock officiating. Entombment will follow at Centre County Memorial Park, State College.
