Richard E. Steinhauer, 72, of State College, formerly of Erie, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Born March 12, 1937 in Erie, he was a son of the late Earl and Barbara Schrenk Steinhauer. On June 24, 1989, he married Katherine E. Pogue, who survives at home. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1964 as an Airman First Class. He worked at Penn State as a boiler operator, retiring in 1996. He was of the Catholic faith. Richard belonged to the American Legion Post 245 in State College and to A.A.R.P. He enjoyed roller skating, tennis, bowling and dancing.

Along with his wife, he is survived by four children, George Dickey Jr. and his wife, Linda of Wattsburg, Margaret Waltz on Monroeville, Leota Haugan and her husband, Scott of Niceville, Fla., and Barbara Hartman and her husband, Charles, of State College; 11 grandchildren, Marc Dickey, Robert, Monica and Allison Waltz, Sean, Aaron, Brandon and Kirsten Haugan, and Nichole, Caleb and Lucas Hartman; a great-granddaughter, Emilie Haugan; a sister, Elaine Gibbs and her husband, Barclay, of New Hope, and a brother, Lawrence Steinhauer and his wife, Marianne, of Erie.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick and Kenneth Steinhauer.

Visitation will be on Sunday, July 19, 2009, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Chester Marshall officiating. Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery in Erie.
