Robert H. Stinson, 87, of Centre Hall, died Friday, January 22, 2010 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center at State College.

He was born September 21, 1922, at Chester, PA; a son of the late Robert H. Stinson Sr. and Mildred Stinson. He was raised in Elwyn, Delaware County.

On March 13, 1993 he married Zelpha Lillian Kearns Nevel who survives at Salem Hill Haven at Spring Mills. In 1943 he married Shirley Mecouch who preceded him in death in 1990.

He served with the 989th Signal Service Company in the U. S. Army during World War II, from April 30, 1943 to January 22, 1946, having spent two and one half years in the South Pacific, he earned the rank of Technician Fourth Grade.

Robert graduated from Media High School in 1940. Moving from Media to Paoli in 1950 he attended night classes at Temple University for two years. Earlier in life he was employed in the freight claims department of the Pennsylvania Railroad for nineteen and one half years. From 1960 until his retirement in 1986 he worked as an insurance salesman for Canada Life Insurance Company. Following his retirement, he moved to Colyer.

He was a member of Calvary Bible Church at Centre Hall. Robert served as president of the Paoli Rotary Club in 1971. Among the things he enjoyed most were baseball, being an avid Phillies fan, as well as an avid Penn State sports fan. He also enjoyed reading.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Hooven and her husband Robert of Paoli; a son, Daniel Stinson of Colyer; three step sons, the Reverend Mahlon Nevel and his wife Beverly of Renovo, Sanford Nevel and his wife Mary Ellen of Centre Hall, and William Nevel and his wife Susan of Morrisdale; two grandchildren Daniel and Christy Hooven; six step grandchildren, Jennifer Gore, Jill Albright, Bill, Scott and James Nevel and Michelle Dildine; and thirteen step great grandchildren.

Mr. Stinson was preceded in death by two sisters, Marjorie Cofiell and Lois Filippi.

Friends will be received form 10:00 until 11:00 a. m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at Calvary Bible Church 600 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall. The funeral will follow at 11:00 a. m. with the Reverend Mahlon Nevel and the Reverend Richard Gilbaugh officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
