Sarah Alice Walton Pernell, of Pleasant Gap, PA, formerly of Clarksburg, West Virginia, died Monday, April 30, 2012 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center in State College.

Born July 18, 1918 in West Union, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Christopher Columbus and Laura (Hiley) “Babe” Walton.

On September 11, 1937 in West Union, West Virginia, she married Gerald Martin Pennell, who preceded her in death in 1972.

Mrs. Pernell was a resident of the Oaks in Pleasant Gap. She graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1936. Working as a placement clerk and postal employee at the Greenwood Post Office in West Virginia, she was a homemaker who devoted her life to her family. She formerly attended the United Brethren Church of West Union, Emmanuel Baptist Church of Clarksburg and the Calvary Baptist Church of State College

Sarah is survived by her son, Robert Pernell (Carol) of Streetsboro, Ohio, daughters Marilyn Pernell of Disputanta, VA and Sandra Shirey (Robert) of Pleasant Gap. She is also survived by grandchildren Shannon Yanoff, Stacey Boysza, Philip Shirey, and Kimberly Shirey; great-grandchildren Lindsay and Madison Yanoff, and Matthew Taft and Jackson Boysza.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Helen Dowdy in 1990, her sister Ernestine Stipp in 2008, and her brother Raymond “Rex” Walton in 2012.

Family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, immediately followed by a funeral service at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College. Funeral services will be conducted with her son, the Reverend Robert Pernell officiating. Interment will be in Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Sarah’s name may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 1100 Boal Avenue, P.O. Box 775, Boalsburg, PA 16827.
