Viola Lois Pifer, 93, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. She was an independent living resident at Brightmore of Wilmington.

She was the wife of the late Kenneth E. Pifer.

Born near Howard, PA on April 18, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Lewis E. Heverly and Edna McKissick Heverly.

Viola was a hard worker and a dedicated housekeeping manager at a hotel in Milesburg, from where she retired.

She was a former member of United Church of Christ in Howard, PA and a past member of Order of the Eastern Star.

Viola was a shy, quiet but opinionated Granny who was a fierce competitor at Canasta and Dominoes. She could tell you anything about Penn State football or basketball and was a fantastic baker and made the best cakes, cookies and peanut butter fudge.

She is survived by her three children: Vicki Simmons (John) of Leland, NC, Myron ‘Woody’ Pifer (Elinor) of Lake City, PA, and Kevin Pifer (Sandra) of Keedysville, MD; eight grandchildren: Vanessa Simmons, Andrew Simmons (Jennie), Andria Pifer, Bethany Miodus (Mike), Corey Pifer (Danielle), Aaron Pifer (Louise), Kendra Pifer, Kelsey Pifer; and six great grandchildren: Dezirae Pifer, Marshal Miodus, Maddox Miodus, Tharen Whiting, Audriana Pifer and Hudson Pifer.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Dorothy, Ethel, Pearl, Lee, Glenn, Floyd, Celia, Alma, Hazel and Ellen.

A visitation will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017, 3:00-4:00 p.m. at Kader-Neff funeral home, 135 W. Main St. Howard, PA. The funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. followed by internment at Schencks Cemetery. There will be a dinner at Lighthouse Reformed Church’s social hall to celebrate Viola’s life as a loving wife, mother, Granny, and friend to so many.
