Walter Terrell Jones, “Terrell”, 64, a resident of State College, died Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born August 30, 1949 in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Walter and Gladys Jackson Jones.

Terrell was a graduate of John Harris High School in Harrisburg class of 1968, where he played on the state championship football team.

Later that year, while attending Lock Haven University, he met the love of his life, then Carla Roser, at the dining halls. They married in 1980. Terrell is survived by his wife, Carla Roser-Jones, his two daughters, Sara Roser-Jones of State College and Courtlyn Roser-Jones of Pittsburgh, and a son Christopher R. Jones of Pittsburgh and his wife Abigail F. Jones. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Juliet Jones and Campbell Jones who, upon his request, affectionately called him “Old Dude.”

Terrell is also survived by two brothers, Milton Jones and his wife Mary of Atlanta, GA and Delamar Jones and his wife Gail of Harrisburg, and one sister Clare Jones, also of Harrisburg. He was preceded in death by a brother Anthony Jones and a sister Rachael Broadnex.

Terrell was a graduate of Lock Haven University in 1972 (BA Sociology) where he was an offensive lineman on the football team. He graduated from Penn State University in 1974 and 1985 (MS, PhD Counselor Education).

Terrell spent almost his entire career at Penn State University, assisting first generation college students matriculate to, and graduate from the university. Although most of his later career was spent in an administrative role as the Vice Provost of Educational Equity, he most loved interacting with students.

He was a dedicated member of Albright Bethune United Methodist Church since 1988. Whenever possible, he liked to fish, garden, cook, walk his dogs, and be with his family.

Friends will be received at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St. State College, PA 16801 on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Albright-Bethune United Methodist Church, West Beaver Ave. and South Burrowes St. on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 1:00 pm with Reverend Kathleen Danley officiating.
