William H. “Bill” Shetler, 85, of Howard, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at his home. Born on March 8, 1931, in Salona, he was the son of the late William D. and Anna R. Duck Shetler. On January 28, 1952, in Howard, he married Evelyn M. McCartney, who passed away on January 23, 1994.

Bill attended the Lock Haven High School. He was enlisted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He obtained the rank of Cpl. (p) and was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal w/1 Silver Star, Purple Heart, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation for his service.

Bill worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1992. His duties included being a Conductor, Flagman, and Brakeman. Bill was a member of the Mt. Eagle Church of Christ Church in Howard, where he was a caretaker for many years. He enjoyed doing things around the church, especially mowing the grass. He was also a member of the Beech Creek American Legion Post 623, where he served as Chaplin.

Bill enjoyed many things throughout his life, especially hunting, fishing, riding his 4-wheeler, and antiquing.

Bill is survived by his children; Billinda D. Poponak of Bellefonte, Michael W. Shetler and his wife, Linda, of Grassflat, and Douglas L. Shetler and his wife, Lisa, of Bangor. Also surviving is his seven grandchildren; J.J. Poponak, Jennifer Palmer, Rachel Yoder, Danielle Anderson, Aaron Shetler, Tanner Shetler, and Madelynn Shetler, three great grandchildren; Tayten Yoder, Maelee Yoder, and D.J. Palmer, a sister, Dorothy Miller of Salona, and Bill’s companion of 22 years, Mildred Fetzer and her family and numerous extended family members.

On accordance with Bill’s wishes, all services will be private. He will be honored with full military honors. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
