William H. Kunes, 90 of Beech Creek, departed this life on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on February 9, 1922 in Jersey Shore, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Kunes. His family moved to Beech Creek in 1924 and he lived there his entire life.

Bill was a very proud Marine serving in WWII. Upon discharge, he worked in various jobs with the local brickyards, farms and railroads. He enjoyed 33 wonderful years of retirement after only serving 25 years as a Corrections Officer at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview. Along with his wife, Vivian and family, he owned and operated Viv and Bill's Restaurant in Beech Creek from 1961 to 1973.

He enjoyed attending the Rockview Retiree's Breakfast every Wednesday at the Sunset Restaurant in Pleasant Gap, going to camp, hunting, baseball, attending the Bloomsburg Fair and spending time with his family. He was an active member of the Liberty Baptist Church of Blanchard, the Beech Creek American Legion, where he held the position of Chaplain for many years; a member of the Nittany Leathernecks of the State College Area; and Charter member of the Beech Creek/Blanchard Fire Company where he served as their first Fire Chief.

He married Vivian Fravel in 1940 who survives at home. He was preceded in death by one sister, three brothers, daughter Barbara Young and son-in-law Dave Wian.

He is also survived by his son, Garry (Juanita); daughters, Nancy (Terry) Hendricks; Trudy (Eddie) Weaver; Mary Wian; Dretta (Kevin) Andrews and son-in-law Don Young. He has 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 25, 2012 at the Liberty Baptist Church of Blanchard, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. there will be a funeral service at 3:00 following the visitation with the Pastor Stan Johnson officiating with military honors following the service. Burial will be at the Liberty Cemetery.
