William A. “Bill” Lyle, 89, of State College, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home. Born on December 8, 1932, in State College, he was the son of the late Alfred and Bertha (Gross) Lyle. On May 4, 1958, in State College, he married Sandra L. Weaver who survives at home.

Bill attended the State College Area High School. He enlisted in the United States Army on February 26, 1953 and received his honorable discharge on December 18, 1954. He received the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Korean Service Medal for his service. He worked at the Pennsylvania State University in the maintenance department for 35 years, retiring in 1986.

Bill was a member of the Woodycrest United Methodist Church in State College, where he served as an usher and a trustee. He also served as the church’s janitor for several years. He was a devoted Christian and held a firm belief in the Lord. He loved to hunt, coached little league baseball when his son played, and looked forward to his buddies getting together for breakfast at either Denny’s or Eat-N-Park. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially showing them off at the breakfast outings.

Bill is survived by his wife; son, Barry M. Lyle and his wife, Stefanie, of St. Joseph, MO; and daughter, Susan L. Long and her husband, Michael, of Osceola Mills. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Brett Lyle, Jesse Lyle, Abby Lyle, Linda Long, and Rebekah Long; and by one great grandson, Vincent Lyle.

Along with his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a son, David A. Lyle who passed in 1984; brother, Ken Lyle; four sisters: Anna Foster, Charlotte Witmer, Naomi Alderton, and Sarah Appleton. He was the last of his generation.

Public visitation will be on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Centre Hall. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Dennis Adams officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Centre County Memorial Park.
