1 Person Taken to the Hospital After Crash Involving Gasoline Tanker on Route 322

One person was taken to the hospital and a portion of U.S. Route 322/General Potter Highway was closed into Tuesday night after a crash involving a car and a tractor trailer hauling 7,500 gallons of gasoline.

The crash happened at about 3:30 p.m. near the intersection with Bamboo Lane in Potter Township. According to a state police report, a 55-year-old Philipsburg man, was traveling eastbound in a Buick Century when he crossed into the opposite lane and struck a Peterbilt truck driven by 40-year-old man from Illinois.

A Centre Hall Fire Company crew extricated the Buick driver, who had “suspected minor injuries” and was taken to UPMC Altoona by Centre LifeLink EMS. He was cited for careless driving.

After the collision, the tanker rolled over a guard rail and was leaking gas. The driver was not injured.

According to reports from Alpha and Boalsburg fire companies, Centre Region Haz-Mat Response and fire company crews controlled the gas spill. Eagle Towing transferred the remaining fuel to another tanker and handled recovery of the tractor trailer.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 322 east of Boalsburg between Red Mill Road and Route 45 were closed, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Drivers were directed to follow the orange detour, which makes use of Route 45 and Route 144.

The road was reopened at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

Gregg Township Fire Company, state police at Rockview, PennDOT and Centre County Emergency Management Agency also responded to the scene.
