Penn State Athletics Reports 33 New COVID-19 Cases

no description

Penn State Athletics reported 33 new COVID-19 test results on Wednesday as part of the department’s weekly release of testing data.

Between Jan. 23 and 29, the department administered 2,208 tests, resulting in 33 new positive tests. As per usual, daily testing according to Big Ten health and safety protocols means that total tests administered is not a reflection of total individuals tested.

Wednesday’s release comes in the wake of the previous testing period that resulted in 37 positive cases. Penn State provides little in the way of testing context as it pertains to active COVID-19 cases, positive test results and overlapping results from one week to the next. Both weeks are by far the largest spikes in positive test results since early fall. Previously testing had seen mostly high single-digit results.

The most recently reported figures bring the athletic department’s cumulative positive tests to 302 since testing began over the summer. Penn State has performed 28,424 tests since student-athletes returned to campus.

Penn State women’s volleyball is the only team not currently taking part in team activities due to COVID-19-related concerns. The team is still slated to face Illinois at Rec Hall on Friday.

Penn State men’s hockey was slated to travel to Michigan this week but the Wolverines are currently under a department-wide pause of all team activities and competitions due to COVID-19.

Centre County reported 82 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as the commonwealth added over 3,000 new cases.
