Four-star athlete Lonnie White Jr. was selected No. 64 overall in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday afternoon setting the stage for a crucial decision for the potential Nittany Lion in the coming weeks as he is set to choose between professional baseball and college football.
On the football field White is rated the No. 7 overall prospect in Pennsylvania for the class of 2021 and the No. 27 receiving prospect in the country according to the 247 Network.
On the baseball diamond White’s evaluation is not much different with MLB.com ranking White as this draft’s No. 72 prospect while The Athletic spotted White a bit higher up the board at the No. 48 position.
“Strong and physical, White is easily a plus runner with speed that allows him to play an outstanding center field, with an average arm, and should make him a threat on the basepaths,” MLB.com wrote. “The biggest question will be if scouts can see enough of him playing baseball to take his huge ceiling early enough to sign him away from his two-sport commitment to college.”
The Malvern Prep star hit .395 with five home runs, 26 stolen bases, 25 RBIs, and 17 extra-base hits during his most recent season of play.
MLB clubs retain the rights to sign a drafted player until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15, so White has until then to decide to begin a pro baseball career or join the Nittany Lion football program.
