Penn State Hockey: Murray Hits Ice for Sabres, Now Second Former Nittany Lion to Play in NHL

Former Penn State forward Brett Murray hit the ice for the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night giving Penn State its second player to play for an NHL team during a regular season game. Murray joins former Nittany Lion Casey Bailey who made a brief appearance with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2015.

Bailey is still the only former Penn State player to score in the NHL.

Murray finished the night +1 with one shot in 11 minutes of ice time. The Sabres lost 8-4 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on the road Thursday.

While at Penn State, Murray had a fairly brief career playing just one and a half seasons with the Nittany Lions after joining the program midway through the 2016-17 slate hitting the ice in just 12 games. Murray would make 21 appearances in 2017-18 scoring one goal and dishing out five assists.

Following the season Murray – a Sabres’ fourth-round draft choice in 2016 – would sign with the Rochester Americans the AHL affiliate of the Sabres. Prior to getting called up the Sabres for Thursday’s contest Murray had led the Americans with 19 points in 23 games played. He was tied for the team lead in goals with nine and second on the team with 10 assists.

The Sabres are back in action Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh. Bailey is currently playing in Germany.
