Sue Paterno Takes ‘Polar Pop’ Challenge for Special Olympics

Sue Paterno, a longtime Special Olympics Pennsylvania supporter and board member, joined more than 1,600 people in taking part in a virtual “Polar Pop” challenge this week.

The virtual event asks supporters to pop a balloon filled with ice water over their heads to raise money and support for Special Olympics Pennsylvania.

Adorned in a Penn State poncho, Paterno took part in the challenge alongside Matt Prosek, a Centre County Special Olympics volunteer and athlete. Noting she doesn’t like the cold, Paterno strapped on a Darth Vader helmet before taking the plunge.

“I love the athletes and I love what we do with them,” Paterno said.

Traditionally, the organization would host eight in-person Polar Plunges around the state. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it opted for an all-virtual event.

To date, the Polar Pop challenge has raised more than $500,000 through 1,600 registrants. The organization set a goal to raise $650,000 through 3,000 participants by Feb. 26. Each donation benefits year-round Special Olympics sports training and competition in Pennsylvania.

Folks at home can get in on the challenge, too, by heading over to Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s website. Those who raise at least $50 will receive an official 2021 Polar Pop long-sleeved shirt.

In years past, the Paterno Family has sponsored an annual Beaver Stadium Run to benefit Special Olympics Pennsylvania. Although last April’s was ultimately canceled, a virtual 5K helped raise more than $350,000 for the organization, and a record 139 Special Olympics athletes virtually participated.

Sue Paterno also has helped lead the Happy Valley Cruise, which has raised money for Special Olympics Pennsylvania by donating a portion of each trip booked on the Penn State celebrity cruise..
