Two-Way Traffic Returning to Pike Street in Lemont

After six months of construction, traffic in College Township will improve this week when a major road reopens.

Pike Street in Lemont will reopen to two-way traffic on Thursday, according to a township a press release on Wednesday. Construction crews will remain on-site, though, and continuing work could prompt periodic lane-flagging and short-term traffic delays.

Dating back to May, Pike Street had operated under a one-way traffic pattern as construction crews worked to improve local infrastructure between Elmwood and Dale streets as part of the long-planned traffic calming and streetscape project. The current phase of the project includes curbing, stormwater upgrades, delineated parallel parking, curb ramps and full sidewalks on both sides of Pike Street.

The project’s first phase, completed in 2021, largely focused on the relocation of water and gas lines in preparation for more intensive work this year.

By spring 2023, crews will plant trees, improve landscaping and wrap up the project with “some minor construction activities.”

As always, College Township said, construction on Pike Street remains schedule and weather-dependent.

Bowman Excavating, Paving and Concrete of Bellefonte serves as the contractor on the $1.52 million project.
