Juvenile on E-Scooter Injured in Crash With Vehicle in Bellefonte

A juvenile riding an electric scooter was taken to the hospital after a crash with a vehicle Monday night in Bellefonte.

The crash happened at about 9:10 p.m. at the intersection of Wilson and East High streets.

According to a statement from borough police, video from a nearby residence showed the juvenile, wearing dark clothing, was riding an e-scooter on East High Street and failed to stop at a stop sign. The juvenile then entered the intersection and was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on Wilson Street.

The juvenile was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center to be treated for injuries.

The extent of the injuries and the juvenile’s age were not disclosed in the statement. A Bellefonte police spokesperson could not provide further comment on Tuesday.

Spring Township police, Undine and Logan fire companies and Bellefonte and Mount Nittany EMS responded assisted at the scene. Wilson Street was closed between Howard and Bishop streets during the response.

In light of the incident, police advised community members that e-scooters “are not classified as street-legal vehicles” in Pennsylvania. “They are restricted to private property and are strictly prohibited from being operated on public roadways or sidewalks.”

Police also noted that only Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles are permitted on public roadways, and that operators of those must be 16 or older.

“We urge parents and guardians to review these regulations with their children,” police wrote. “Adhering to traffic control devices and ensuring high visibility is essential for the safety of all residents.”
