Bellefonte Area Getting Another Dollar General

BELLEFONTE — Another Dollar General is coming to Centre County.

Work is progressing at a rapid pace for a new location at 586 E. College Ave., Bellefonte. The newest location will sit just off the Pleasant Gap exit of Interstate 99 .

Dollar General’s corporate offices confirmed the new location.

“At this time, a store opening is slated for fall 2023, but understand that construction progress may alter this date,” a Dollar General spokesperson said.

The location will be the fourth in the Bellefonte ZIP code. The others are at 141 S. Spring St. in downtown Bellefonte, 206 Cobblestone Road in Walker Township and 517 Dell Street in Boggs Township.

So why another Bellefonte location?

“Our customers are at the center of all that we do, and meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority when choosing store locations. In selecting store sites, we take a number of factors into consideration, carefully evaluating each potential new store location to ensure we can continue to meet our customers’ price, value and selection needs. We further strive to provide convenience for customers who may not have affordable nearby retail options,” the spokesperson said.

The new store, which will be open seven days a week, will have six to 10 employees. The final number of employees will be based on the “individual needs of the store.”

Dollar General stores have popped up across the county in recent years, filling voids in communities without large supermarkets. The stores sell name-brand and private brand merchandise such as foods, health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal items and basic clothing.

They also carry brand names such as Clorox, Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Kellogg’s, General Mills, Nabisco, Hanes, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola.

There are also Dollar General stores in State College (3283 W. College Ave.), Centre Hall (421 S. Pennsylvania Ave.), Snow Shoe (644 E. Sycamore Road) and Philipsburg (124 Walton St.).

In March, Dollar General announced that it planned to debut over 1,000 new stores as it looks to capture even more sales from shoppers who are looking for bargains.

The Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based retailer now boasts more than 19,000 stores in the United States and Mexico.
