A new Detroit-style pizza shop has opened in State College.

8 Mile Pizza was scheduled to open at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the former Gumby’s Pizza location at 300 S. Pugh St., according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. Gumby’s permanently closed its location in the O’Brien Place building in March.

The new eatery specializes in Detroit-style pizza, a rectangular pan pizza noted for its thick and crisp crust, brick cheese and toppings to the edges of the pie.

“Detroit-style pizza has become a favorite all over the country in recent years (including my own),” owner Steve Masterson, who also operates live music venue Stage West at 420 E. College Ave., wrote in an email to StateCollege.com in May. “Every town has a couple of good pizzas, but not every town has a great Detroit pizza. Some people may have never even tried Detroit-style pizza before, and they are in for a real treat.”

Named for the famed road on Detroit’s northern border, 8 Mile Pizza’s menu offers eight different personal and regular size pizzas ranging from classic to chicken bacon ranch to vodka sauce. It also features cheesesteaks and three varieties of chicken cheesesteaks, wings, salads, cheese sticks and baked pretzel sticks.

The restaurant’s hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
