A shaved ice shop chain has opened its new location in Bellefonte.
Pelican’s SnoBalls opened for business on Wednesday at 219 S. Water St., in the former Subway building next to Talleyrand Park.
Serving colorful, New Orleans-style shaved ice born from “a tradition of combining smooth fluffy snow with bold flavors,” Pelican’s offers more than 100 flavors with a variety of toppings, cream options and signature SnoBall combinations, as well as sugar-free flavor options. SnoBalls are softer and fluffier than the traditional crunchy ice of a sno-cone.
Pelican’s also offers bookings to bring its SnoBalls to events like parties, festivals and school and church festivities.
The shop is the first Pelican’s franchise in Centre County and fourth in Pennsylvania. Before the Bellefonte shop opened, the nearest location was in Mifflinburg, and both are operated by the same franchisees.
Hours for the Bellefonte shop are noon to 9 p.m. daily. Pelican’s franchises are typically open from early spring until October.
The franchise is leasing the building from Bellefonte Borough, which acquired it in 2021 after Subway closed the previous year.
Pelican’s SnoBalls launched in 2001 and now has more than 200 stores in 14 states.
