Boalsburg’s Music on the Lawn Continues With Andy Tolins

Music on the Lawn, the free summer concert series in Boalsburg, continues Sunday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m., with a performance by Andy Tolins.

The series, part of the Grounded in Boalsburg community initiative, brings live music to the lawn at Zion Lutheran Church, 305 N. Church St. Bring a chair or blanket, find a spot on the grass, and settle in for the afternoon. The event is rain or shine — if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the concert moves inside the church.

Tolins has been a fixture of the central Pennsylvania music scene for more than 30 years, working as a guitarist, bassist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who also plays dobro, mandolin and National steel. His sound moves across bluegrass, Celtic, blues, rock and roll and swing, mixing original songs with traditional tunes.

He’s played lead guitar with classic rock band The Screaming Ducks since 1988, and performs monthly with keyboardist John “JT” Thompson as Thompson and Tolins at Webster’s Café and Bookstore. In 1999, Billboard Magazine named his group, the Triple A Blues Band, its Best Unsigned Band for the song “High Water.”

An afternoon with Tolins tends to cover a lot of musical ground — a solo set that can move from a Delta blues riff to an old-time fiddle tune without missing a beat.

Sept. 13 marks the fifth Music on the Lawn concert of the season, following Rock Hill Revival on May 17, Tussey Mountain Moonshiners on June 14, Porch Party on July 19 and Free Range on Sug. 16.
