Centre Region Parks and Recreation on Monday opened a new project at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, 548 Puddintown Road, featuring more than two dozens pieces of art created by local residents.

The 27 laminated art pieces included in the ArtWalk along the nature center’s boardwalk are hung from trees or just off the boardwalk.

“Over the fall months, the agency brainstormed a way to add color and cheerfulness along the nature center’s boardwalk,” a release from CRPR stated. “We wanted to add an element to the boardwalk that would continue to encourage our residents and visitors to still get outside and enjoy nature, and that would lift people’s spirits during the winter months. That’s when the idea for the ArtWalk took shape.”

Submissions were opened to the community and came from children, teens and adults. One family even collaborated on a piece. Participants had about two weeks to pick-up their 11-inch by 14-inch art board, create their art and return it to CRPR.

“While creating an art piece based on nature was not required, we have several art pieces that do incorporate water, animals, trees, landscapes and more,” according to CRPR.

A brochure with photos and information about each piece and the artists is available at the trailhead or can be downloaded in advance from the CRPR website.

The ArtWalk is free and will remain in place through Feb. 21. In addition to the artwork, those taking a winter walk along the boardwalk may spot some of the wildlife frequently found at Millbrook Marsh, such as whitetail deer, mallard ducks, rabbits and wintering birds.

The boardwalk is open from dawn until dusk daily and is not maintained during winter months, so visitors are encouraged to wear sturdy boots and to be prepared for some snow and ice.
