Nonprofit organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace will bring volunteers together at Lowe’s Home Improvement in State College next month to build 50 beds for children in Centre, Clinton and Lycoming counties who do not have a proper place to sleep.
The local chapter of the nonprofit will host its annual Bunks Across America event beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 104 Valley Vista Drive.
The event will bring together community volunteers, Lowe’s employees and other local partners for a day of building beds that will eventually be delivered to children in need.
The local chapter currently has 28 children on its waiting list for beds, according to the organization. Some children on the list sleep on couches, share beds with family members or sleep on the floor.
“Having a safe and comfortable bed of their own is crucial for their physical and mental well-being, academic success and overall development,” the organization wrote.
Lowe’s provided the local chapter, SHP BEDS PA-Lock Haven, with $12,500 to fund construction of the 50 beds. Organizers selected the State College Lowe’s due to Centre County being the chapter’s newest and fastest-growing service area.
Volunteers will work across 12 build stations with guidance from trained members of the organization’s core team. Participants will be able to help with tasks ranging from using power tools to preparing lumber and assembling bunk bed components.
Once completed, the beds will be loaded onto trailers and delivered directly to the homes of local children.
Volunteer registration is available online.
Rebelz Food Truck will provide lunch for registered volunteers and remain on site throughout the event for customers and visitors.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit organization that builds and delivers beds to children who do not have adequate sleeping arrangements.
The organization operates under the goal of ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor. The group relies on volunteers and donations to build and distribute beds throughout the country.
