Centre County recorded one new COVID-19 death and 26 more cases on Tuesday as local and statewide hospitalizations linked to the virus continued to tick up.
The death is the county’s 349th attributed to COVID-19 since March 2020 and first reported by the Department of Health in 23 days. It was among 34 COVID deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry on Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 44,713.
Mount Nittany Medical Center has 14 COVID-19 inpatients, two more than on Monday and the most since March 2, with none in intensive care [-1] or on ventilators.
The patients range in age from 28 to 97, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID inpatient dashboard. Nine are fully vaccinated and five are not vaccinated
COVID-19 hospitalizations throughout Pennsylvania increased for the fourth consecutive day. Statewide, 731 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 46 more than on Monday, with 84 in intensive care [+2] and 41 on ventilators [+8].
Statewide COVID hospitalizations have grown by 110 over the past four days and are at their highest level in seven weeks.
Centre County’s new cases bring its total to 35,703 (31,638 confirmed and 4,065 probable). The county’s rolling seven-day average for new cases is 25, up from 20 a week ago and eight a month ago.
Pennsylvania’s registered 2,134 new positives to bring the statewide total to 2,825,267. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,984, up from 1,505 a week ago and 597 a month ago.
Community Level
Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the eighth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.
Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.
Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level. A cluster of three Northern Tier counties — Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna — are at the high level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.
Prison cases
Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
At Benner, 1,426 inmates are fully vaccinated, 27 are partially vaccinated and 219 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 304 are fully vaccinated [-1] and 325 are not vaccinated [+1].
At Rockview, 1,676 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 80 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 350 are fully vaccinated [-2] and 367 are not vaccinated [+1].
Vaccinations
DOH has not updated vaccination numbers in five days. As of April 28, 95,407 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 14,214 are partially covered. First booster doses have been administered to 50,610 county residents and 4,467 have received a second booster.
Among the county’s entire population, 70.4% have received at least one dose, 59.9% are fully vaccinated and 51.9% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.8% have received at least one dose, 64% are fully vaccinated and 54.6% have received a booster.
Statewide, 78% of adults and 68.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
