Centre County Adds 1 COVID-19 Death, 93 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 4,818 New Positives

Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 93 more cases of the virus on Saturday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The death is the county’s 332nd attributed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and 11th reported this month. The new cases bring the county’s total to 34,210 (30,436 confirmed and 3,774 probable).

Centre County’s moving seven-day average for new cases is 57, down from 93 a week ago and 178 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania reported 4,818 new COVID-19 positives to bring the statewide total to 2,722,395.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 3,593, down from 6,856 a week ago and 12,726 two weeks ago.

With 69 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 42,203.

Hospitalizations

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 34 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, one more than on Friday, with none in intensive care [-1] or on ventilators.

Statewide, the monthlong trend of decreasing COVID-19 hospitalizations continued, dropping to the lowest number of inpatients since Nov. 15. According to the DOH dashboard, 2,773 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 136 fewer than on Friday, with 455 patients in intensive care [-24] and 305 on ventilators [-4].

Nursing and personal care home cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported no new COVID-19 cases among residents and employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 762 resident cases, 738 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 21 active COVID-19 cases among inmates, two fewer than on Friday, and 12 among staff [-1].

Rockview state prison has eight active inmate cases [-1] and six among staff [+1].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,470 inmates are fully vaccinated, 17 are partially vaccinated and 190 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated and 318 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,713 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 61 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 346 are fully vaccinated and 371 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Saturday morning, 93,601 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 51 since Friday, and 14,004 are partially covered [+4]. Booster doses have been administered to 47,903 county residents [+70].

Among the county’s entire population, 68.9% have received at least one dose, 58.7% are fully vaccinated and 50% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.2% have received at least one dose, 62.9% are fully vaccinated and 52.6% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76% of adults and 66.3% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
