Centre County Adds 15 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 574 New Positives

Centre County registered 15 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday to surpass 35,000 since March 2020, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county now has had a total of 35,011 cases (31,094 confirmed and 3,917 probable). Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 9.7, according to DOH, down from 10.9 a week ago and 38.6 a month ago.

Pennsylvania reported fewer than 1,000 new positives for the 12th time in 13 days. The 574 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,776,302.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 595, down from 781 a week ago and 2,341 a month ago. The average is Pennsylvania’s lowest since July 25.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has five COVID-19 inpatients, two more than on Tuesday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators.

The patients range in age from 21 to 64, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Two are fully vaccinated and three are not vaccinated

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Aug. 3. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 570 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 28 fewer than on Tuesday, with 99 in intensive care [+8] and 53 on ventilators [-1].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the eighth consecutive day, keeping the total at 346.

With 24 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,115.

Community level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the second consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.

Introduced on Feb. 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 66 of 67 counties are at the low level, with only Crawford County at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Rockview state prison has no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

Centre County’s other state prison, Benner, has one case among inmates and one among staff.

At Benner, 1,425 inmates are fully vaccinated, 18 are partially vaccinated and 203 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 314 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 314 are not vaccinated [-1].

Rockview has 1,717 inmates who are fully vaccinated, four who are partially vaccinated and 79 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 348 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 369 are not vaccinated [-1].

Vaccinations

As of Wednesday morning, 94,621 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 36 since Tuesday, and 14,171 are partially covered [+9]. Booster doses have been administered to 49,566 county residents [+59]

Among the county’s entire population, 69.7% have received at least one dose, 59.3% are fully vaccinated and 51.1% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75% have received at least one dose, 63.4% are fully vaccinated and 53.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.9% of adults and 67.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
