Centre County Adds 2 COVID-19 Deaths, 99 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 9,838 New Positives

Centre County registered two new COVID-19 deaths and 99 more cases of the virus on Wednesday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county now has had 280 deaths attributed to the virus since the start of the pandemic, including 22 this month. At least one COVID-19 death among Centre County residents has been reported eight of the last 10 days.

The new cases increase Centre County’s total to 24,791 (22,363 confirmed and 2,428 probable). The county also had 64 new negative test results to bring the total to 86,337.

Pennsylvania added 9,838 cases, bringing the commonwealth’s total to 1,913,959. Statewide, there were 2,926 new negatives for a total of 6,036,121.

With 168 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 35,783.

Hospitalizations

Neither Mount Nittany Medical Center nor DOH updated their COVID-19 hospitalization dashboards as of 1 p.m. on Wednesday

As of Tuesday, Mount Nittany Medical Center had 56 COVID-positive inpatients, with six in intensive care and four on ventilators.

The patients ranged in age from 22 to 95. Thirteen were fully vaccinated and 43, about 77%, were not vaccinated.

Pennsylvania had 4,552 COVID-19 inpatients on Tuesday, with 931 in intensive care and 584 on ventilators.

An estimated 90% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has six active COVID-19 cases among inmates [-1] and 20 among staff.

Rockview state prison has 27 active inmate cases and 10 among staff [-6].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,526 inmates are fully vaccinated, nine are partially vaccinated and 191 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 294 are fully vaccinated and 334 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,684 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 64 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 341 are fully vaccinated and 376 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Wednesday morning, 90,480 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 112 since Tuesday, and 11,883 are partially covered [+159]. Booster doses have been administered to 33,918 county residents [+464].

Among the county’s entire population, 64.8% have received at least one dose and 56.5% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 70.1% have received at least one dose and 61.2% are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 73.7% of adults and 63.3% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

All individuals age 16 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
