Centre County Adds 27 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 1,816 New Positives

Centre County recorded 27 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday to bring its total to 34,638, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Among total cases, 30,782 are confirmed and 3,856 are probable.

Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 36, down from 45 a week ago and 66 two weeks ago. The average is the county’s lowest since early November.

Pennsylvania reported 1,816 new positives to increase the statewide total to 2,751,352.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 2,254, down from 3,159 a week ago and 4,534 two weeks ago. The statewide average is the lowest since mid-August.

Hospitalizations

Local COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to decline and are at their lowest level since early September. Mount Nittany Medical Center had 14 COVID-19 patients on Thursday, two fewer than on Wednesday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators for the 11th consecutive day.

The patients range in age from 48 to 100, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Eight are fully vaccinated and six are not vaccinated.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped to their lowest level since Aug. 25. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 1,620 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 85 fewer than on Wednesday, with 285 patients in intensive care [-11] and 191 on ventilators [-4].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 335.

With 67 COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 43,069.

Nursing and personal care home cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported one new COVID-19 cases among employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 776 resident cases, 749 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has four active COVID-19 cases among inmates, three fewer than on Wednesday, and four among staff [-2].

Rockview state prison has no active inmate cases and three among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,469 inmates are fully vaccinated, 19 are partially vaccinated and 194 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 313 are fully vaccinated [-1] and 315 are not vaccinated [+1].

Rockview has 1,691 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 63 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 350 are fully vaccinated and 367 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

The CDC scale has four levels: low, moderate, substantial and high.

Statewide, 63 of 67 counties are at the high level. Sullivan County is at the moderate level and Carbon, Dauphin, Delaware, Lehigh, Monroe and Snyder counties are at the substantial level. counties listed as substantial, the second highest level on the CDC scale.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 94,053 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 52 since Wednesday, and 14,060 are partially covered [-11]. Booster doses have been administered to 48,602 county residents [+86].

Among the county’s entire population, 69.3% have received at least one dose, 59% are fully vaccinated and 50.5% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.6% have received at least one dose, 63.1% are fully vaccinated and 53.1% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.4% of adults and 66.9% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
