Centre County Adds 3 COVID-19 Deaths, 252 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 17,457 New Positives

Centre County registered three new COVID-19 deaths and 252 more cases of the virus on Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county has had 309 deaths attributed to COVID-19, including 20 reported this month.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 31,283 (28,029 confirmed and 3,254 probable). Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 244.

Pennsylvania recorded fewer than 20,000 new cases and saw an increase lower than the seven-day moving average for the fourth consecutive day. The 17,457 new positive bring the the commonwealth’s total to 2,523,589. The statewide seven-day average is 21,217 cases.

With 326 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 39,093.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has 48 COVID-19 inpatients, two more than on Wednesday, with six in intensive care [+1] and four on ventilators.

The patients range in age from 28 to 96, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Thirteen are fully vaccinated and 35 are not vaccinated.

Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 hospitalizations fell for the fourth time in five days and dropped below 7,000 for the first time in 10 days. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard 6,962 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized statewide, 55 fewer than on Wednesday, with 1,116 patients in intensive care [-8] and 694 on ventilators [-13].

Nursing and Personal Care Home Cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported five new cases among residents and four among employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 732 resident cases, 677 employee cases and 180 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison no active COVID-19 cases among inmates, down from one on Wednesday, and 28 among staff [+10].

Rockview state prison has 52 active inmate cases and 61 among staff [+13].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,488 inmates are fully vaccinated, 12 are partially vaccinated and 194 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 306 are fully vaccinated and 322 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,693 inmates who are fully vaccinated, one who is partially vaccinated and 57 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 342 are fully vaccinated and 375 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 92,417 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 163 since Wednesday, and 13,791 are partially covered [+19]. Booster doses have been administered to 45,566 county residents [+4,830].

Among the county’s entire population, 67.9% have received at least one dose, 57.9% are fully vaccinated and 48.2% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 73.2% have received at least one dose, 62.3% are fully vaccinated and 50.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 75.1% of adults and 65.2% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
