Students from State College Area School District’s Delta Program have been recognized with the Pennsylvania Governor’s Civic Engagement Award for the second consecutive year.

The award is presented by the Pennsylvania Departments of State and Education to celebrate the efforts of high school students to engage and educate their peers about getting involved in the voting process.

Students and staff registered 85% of eligible Delta Program students to vote this past year, qualifying for the Gold Level School Award. Among 500 school districts in Pennsylvania, 33 qualified for Civic Engagement Award, and only 19 of those reached the Gold Level.

Bailey Greenland also earned the Poll Worker Award for helping staff a local voting location during the primary election in May.

Teacher Lynda Hauman supervised the students in their work, and the League of Women Voters of Centre County provided assistance.

“Students at these winning schools worked hard to register their eligible classmates to vote and hopefully launch them on a lifelong habit of voting,” Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt said. “The future health of our representative democracy depends on engaging the next generation of voters, and students who participate in the GCEA program help make that happen.”
