Bijayini Satpathy, a renowned Odissi dance artist and scholar, is bringing her expertise to Penn State for a week of master classes, lectures and main-stage performances on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and Thursday, Oct. 19.

“Abhipsaa — A Seeking,” Satpathy’s choreographic debut that explores her stories told through interpretations of “classical” Indian dance, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday at the Eisenhower Auditorium. A post-performance discussion with Satpathy will be offered after the show’s conclusion on Thursday.

“This is where it becomes contemporary, I believe in this journey in essence but not in the exact structuring of it,” Satpathy told the Center for the Performing Arts about “Abhipsaa.” “I am breaking structure in the way the sequencing of choreography has happened and finding other layers that have not been looked at.”

Tickets are $5 for University Park students, $18 for individuals 18 and younger, and $32 for adults. They can be purchased through Ticketmaster, in person on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eisenhower Auditorium, or by calling Eisenhower Auditorium.

Before Satpathy takes the stage on Wednesday, students and artists are welcome to observe her for a sketching opportunity at Eisenhower from 3 to 4:30 p.m. while she rehearses. Registration is required, and those who choose to attend must exit and re-enter with a ticket at 7:30 p.m. to enjoy the show.

Satpathy will hold a master class from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, in 232 AB in the HUB to discuss pedagogy. The class will focus on codified movement on isolated limbs, specifically leg movements. Prior experience is beneficial, but not necessary. Registration is required.

The master class and the sketching opportunity are free, but a “give what you can” mindset is in place. The suggested donation is $15.
