Mount Nittany Health Foundation has established a new fund aimed at bringing more specialty physicians to the local community, thanks to a $5 million gift from Stephen and Patricia Benkovic.
With the largest gift in the foundation’s 22-year history, the Benkovic Fund for Community Investment “will help address the critical needs in specialty physician recruitment to ensure quality healthcare remains accessible within the region,” according to a news release.
“Based on our own healthcare experiences, Pat and I know how critical it is to have access to care locally,” Stephen Benkovic, a world-renowned chemist and a Penn State professor since 1965, said in a statement. “We are honored to play a role in ensuring our community can receive the world-class care they deserve.”
The fund will focus on initiatives to attract top medical talent to the region, supporting strategic recruitment efforts to meet the needs of the community. The Benkovics encouraged to join them in supporting the fund.
“Steve and Pat’s commitment to local healthcare is inspiring and will leave a lasting impact on our community,” Kathleen Rhine, president and CEO of Mount Nittany Health, said. “This gift allows Mount Nittany Health to recruit dedicated physicians and meet the growing needs of the community.”
The fund comes at a time when Mount Nittany Health is expanding investments in its medical facilities. The State College-based health system’s new outpatient center at Toftrees West opened last summer, and a new 10-floor patient tower is under construction at the medical center, with completion anticipated in late 2026.
