Sports medicine specialist hired by Mount Nittany Physician Group

STATE COLLEGE — Mount Nittany Health has announced, through a press release, the addition of Kevin Wilson, MD, to Mount Nittany Physician Group Orthopedics, as an orthopedic sports medicine specialist.

“Helping people get back to where they want to be is what inspires me as a surgeon,” said Wilson. “Listening to a patient’s story and then working for ways to help them meet their goals is incredibly rewarding.”

A native of Hollidaysburg, Wilson earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Gettysburg College, where he graduated magna cum laude, and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency with the National Capital Consortium at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and went on to serve the U.S. Navy for five years at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, where he deployed twice.

Following his distinguished naval service, Dr. Wilson refined his sports medicine expertise by completing the world-renowned UPMC Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship with Freddie Fu, MD, and Jim Bradley, MD, where he worked alongside the doctors caring for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and University of Pittsburgh athletes.

In 2014, he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for exceptional care of historical volumes of combat casualties at Bethesda during his training, and was nationally recognized by selection in the American Orthopaedic Associations’ Resident Leadership Forum. In 2016, Wilson was selected as one of three orthopaedic surgeons in the nation attending the prestigious Advanced Arthroscopic Traveling Fellowship with the Arthroscopy Association of North America. Wilson was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal in 2018, after serving as the orthopaedic surgeon and operations officer, Forward Resuscitative Surgical System, Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response Africa.

In June, at the 2019 American Shoulder and Elbow Society’s Fellows Symposium, Wilson was awarded the Robert H. Cofield, MD Award for research on returning to sports after shoulder labral repair surgery.

Wilson is board certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America and Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons.
