Alpha Fire crews responded to a dwelling fire at 4:43 a.m. this morning at 1010 S. Pugh Street, with reports of smoke and flames showing from the second floor.

Police evacuated the building, leaving only an adjacent apartment occupied, due to heavy smoke conditions.

Alpha crews entered the unevacuated apartment adjacent to the involved unit and helped two residents and two dogs to safety.

Crews tapped a nearby hydrant and stretched a leader line to fight the blaze.  The fire was darkened down with a pressurized water can while a high rise pack was being deployed for complete suppression.

No one was hurt in the fire, and property damage was contained mainly to the apartment’s kitchen area.
