Atherton Construction Moves to Night Shift

If you’re one of the many people who’ve gotten stuck in the Atherton Street construction zone during rush-hour, you’re going to catch a break.

Daytime traffic jams should ease up, at least for now, but nighttime travel could be another matter.

The road work on Atherton Street has been shifted to the evening hours in an effort to avoid disrupting businesses that use the Martin Street intersection according to project manager Dave Liptak.

Workers will be ripping up the intersection where Atherton Street meets Martin Street as part of a project to improve the drainage system.

Liptak says the construction will take place when businesses like Best Buy, Red Lobster, Walmart and Staples are less busy.

The work will be happening from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until Aug. 7, when regular construction times will resume. But if you’re driving during those evening hours, you should still expect lane restriction and traffic delays.

Anyone trying to reach Martin Street can use Blue Course Drive or West Aaron Drive.

Depending on when construction finishes at the intersection, Liptak says there is a possibility that that work crews will move back to regular hours ahead of schedule.

The roadwork, which began last October, should still be completed in September says Marla Fannin, public information director for PennDOT.

The $4.4 million project includes upgrading the drainage system and relocating underground utility liines and moving some traffic lights.
