Bell’s Greek Pizza Closes After 11 Years

The warning signs were there. When Bell’s Greek Pizza failed to open for Blue-White weekend (and for most of the second semester) without an explanation, we all should have seen it coming. As Shandygaff-goers poured out into the streets, the lights remained dim. It dropped off of OrderUp.

Now, though, it seems to be official. After 11 years in State College, the Bell’s storefront on 214 E. Calder Way has been gutted, with almost all equipment and signage of the former State College pizza staple gone without a trace.

Workers at the neighboring Pita Pit confirmed that Bell’s had closed for good but they did not know why. Bell’s ownership could not be reached for comment.

Bell’s opened in 2005 to much fanfare. Its thick crust-style pizza was a welcome alternative to the late-night traditional pies of Canyon or College Pizza. If you weren’t in the mood for pizza, Bell’s was always well stocked with Greek side items (the rice pudding was particularly good).

Bell’s (a shortened version of the previous owner’s name, Beloyeannis) opened up for the first time in 1967 at Michigan State and expanded to several other Big Ten schools since then. But at Penn State, no longer. So it goes.
