Centre County reported 59 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday to bring its total to 1,508 since the first was reported on March 20, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The county also had 246 new negative test results. A total of 21,479 patients in Centre County have tested negative for the virus.
According to DOH data, Centre County has two COVID-19 hospitalizations.
Among Wednesday’s new cases, 54 are confirmed and five are probable.
In the past two weeks, Centre County has added 970 new cases, the vast majority in the State College and University Park zip codes. On Tuesday, Penn State reported 458 new student cases resulting from testing over the weekend and test results that previously had been pending from the week of Sept. 4-10.
According to the New York Times on Wednesday, State College is No. 2 in the country for metro areas with the fastest rising number of COVID-19 cases on a population-adjusted basis.
Statewide, the health department reported 776 new positives increasing Pennsylvania’s total to 146,990.
There were 12,847 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,708,131 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.
An estimated 82% of COVID-19 patients in the state — about 120,532 — have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.
Across Pennsylvania, 488 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 60 requiring use of a ventilator.
The health department reported 28 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state’s total at 7,903. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner’s office has confirmed only seven, ranging in age from 74 to 96.
Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older, according to DOH.
Of the patients who have tested positive to date the age breakdown is as follows:
- Approximately 1% are ages 0-4;
- Nearly 2% are ages 5-12;
- Approximately 4% are ages 13-18;
- Approximately 12% are ages 19-24;
- Approximately 36% are ages 25-49;
- Nearly 22% are ages 50-64; and
- Approximately 22% are ages 65 or older.
Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 142,666 are confirmed and 4,324 are probable. In Centre County, 1,449 are confirmed and 59 are probable.
