Centre County Adds 7 New COVID-19 Cases

Centre County added seven new COVID-19 cases on Sunday to bring its total to 469 since the first was reported on March 20.

The county also had 242 new negative test results, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. A total of 13,683 patients in Centre County have tested negative for the virus. 

In the past two weeks the county has added 77 new cases of the virus, as both the population and testing have increased with the return of Penn State students. On Friday, the university reported that 27 University Park students had tested positive out of 2,950 tests over the previous seven days. Another 1,230 were still awaiting results at the time Penn State updated its COVID-19 dashboard.

Statewide, the health department reported 670 new positives, increasing Pennsylvania’s total to 133,504.

There were 11,791 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,515,899 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative.

Over the past seven days, 160,682 COVID-19 tests have been administered in Pennsylvania with 4,405 positive cases.

An estimated 82% of COVID-19 patients in the state — about 109,473 — have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.

The health department reported two new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state’s total at 7,673. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner’s office has confirmed only seven, ranging in age from 74 to 96.

Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older, according to DOH.

Of the patients who have tested positive the age breakdown is as follows:

  • 1% are ages 0-4;
  • Nearly 2% are ages 5-12;
  • Nearly 4% are ages 13-18;
  • 10% are ages 19-24; 
  • Nearly 38% are ages 25-49; 
  • Nearly 23% are ages 50-64; and
  • Approximately 23% are ages 65 or older.

Among the state’s total cases, 129,703 are confirmed and 3,801 are probable. In Centre County, 423 are confirmed and 46 are probable. All seven cases reported on Saturday were confirmed.

Cases in Centre County nursing and personal care homes remained unchanged with 35 among residents and 22 among staff at eight facilities.

Among Centre County’s bordering counties, Blair now has 456 [+13] total cases, Union has 371 [+4], Huntingdon has 364 [+4], Clearfield has 227 [+1], Mifflin has 160 [+1] and Clinton has 135 [+2].
