Hospitalizations
Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 36 COVID-19 patients, ranging in age from 19 to 80 as of Friday afternoon, four more than were registered with the Department of Health on Thursday.
According to Mount Nittany’s newly released COVID-19 inpatient dashboard, 29 of the COVID-19 inpatients are not vaccinated against the virus and seven are fully vaccinated.
Four are in intensive care [+2 since Thursday] and three are on ventilators [+1].
Since Sept. 1, Mount Nittany has had a total of 106 COVID-19 inpatients, according to a hospital spokesperson. That’s 37 more than it had for the month of August and seven times as many as it had in September 2020.
The average age of Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatients in September is 58, Tiffany Cabibbo, vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer, said in a statement.
Mount Nittany had an average daily census of 34 COVID-19 inpatients this week, up from 28 the previous week.
“We are alarmed at the escalating rate of COVID positive hospitalizations,” Cabibbo said.
“As a community, and as doctors and nurses on the front lines, we have been fighting the pandemic for more than a year and half now. We strongly urge the community to please get vaccinated, social distance, avoid large gatherings, wear a mask, and wash your hands frequently. In addition, if you are experiencing any symptoms or have been exposed to someone who is COVID positive, then please isolate yourself from others.”
Mount Nittany continues operating under its pandemic response plan to adjust services, including prohibiting visitors except in special circumstances and making daily decisions to cancel or reschedule elective surgeries and procedures that require an overnight stay.

Statewide, Pennsylvania has 2,641 COVID-19 inpatients, an increase of 88 since Thursday, with 662 in intensive care [+29] and 324 on ventilators [+13]. Hospitalizations are at their highest level since April 24.
An estimated 90% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Transmission level
All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update on Friday afternoon.
Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.
