Centre County on Saturday added 73 COVID-19 cases to bring its total to 1,135 since the first was reported on March 20, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Among Saturday’s new cases, 71 are confirmed and two are probable. In the State College and University Park zip codes, there were 66 new positives.
The county had 360 new negative test results. A total of 20,059 patients in Centre County have tested negative for the virus.
According to DOH data, Centre County has one COVID-19 hospitalization, one fewer than on Friday.
Centre County’s four highest single-day case totals have occurred in the past four days: 184 (Sept.9), 137 (Sept. 11), 73 (Saturday), and 55 (Sept. 10).
Since Sept. 1, Centre County has added 644 new COVID-19 cases, 158 more than the months of March through August combined. The vast majority of new cases have been in the State College and University Park zip codes and most have been connected to testing of Penn State students. Since Aug. 14, when the university’s COVID-19 dashboard showed its first cases, Penn State has had 688 cases.
Between Sept. 4-10, the county had — by far — the highest COVID-19 incidence rate in the state over the last seven days with 255.5 cases per 100,000 people, according to the Department of Health’s early warning monitoring dashboard.. The next closest was Columbia County at 82.5. Centre County’s positivity rate over that period was 9.2%, fourth highest in the state and an increase of 3.9% from the previous seven days.
Statewide, the health department reported 920 new positives, increasing Pennsylvania’s total to 143,805.
There were 11,972 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,664,000 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.
An estimated 82% of COVID-19 patients in the state — about 117,920 — have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.
Across Pennsylvania, 470 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 63 requiring use of a ventilator.
The health department reported 25 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state’s total at 7,862. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner’s office has confirmed only seven, ranging in age from 74 to 96.
Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older, according to DOH.
Of the patients who have tested positive to date the age breakdown is as follows:
- Approximately 1% are ages 0-4;
- Nearly 2% are ages 5-12;
- Approximately 4% are ages 13-18;
- Nearly 12% are ages 19-24;
- Nearly 37% are ages 25-49;
- Nearly 22% are ages 50-64; and
- Approximately 22% are ages 65 or older.
Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 138,759 are confirmed and 4,126 are probable. In Centre County, 1,083 are confirmed and 52 are probable.
