Recycling of fresh cut Christmas trees in State College Borough will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 3 and continue through Friday, Jan. 13.

No phone call is required for pick up during that time.

Trees should be free of lights, ornaments and tree stands and should be placed with the trunk closest to the curb. Borough crews will process natural trees through a chipper and recycle the wood chips into mulch or compost.

If a snowstorm is predicted, trees should be removed from the curb to facilitate snow plowing operations. Beginning Jan. 16, residents should call the Public Works Department at (814) 234-7135 or (814) 234-7140 to schedule collection for regular Monday brush collection.

Advanced Disposal residential customers in Benner, College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton Townships can have their Christmas trees collected at the curb for recycling on their regular collection day during the week of Jan. 9-13.

All lights and decorations should be removed and trees should not be placed in bags.

Trees will be taken to the State College Borough Composting Facility and after recycling applied as a ground cover in landscaping applications throughout the townships. Normally 18 to 20 tons, or 12 to 15 truckloads, of trees are recycled through this collection, according to the Centre Region Council of Governments.

As in State College, trees should be removed from the curb if snow is in the forecast.

Through early February, College Township road crews will collect trees for recycling throughout College Township, weather permitting.

All Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority curbside recycling customers can recycle their gift boxes, non-metallic wrapping and tissue paper with their curbside recyclables. Customers should bag these items with mixed paper.

Non-curbside customers wishing to recycle these items can drop them off in ‘Mixed Paper’ recycling containers

For more information about recycling drop-off locations, call (814) 238-7005 or visit www.centrecountyrecycles.org.
