It seems that in State College, the popular convenience store and gas station chain Sheetz is like a phoenix.
A new location is set to open on Pugh Street, but it will rise from the ashes of the 2000 E. College Ave. location, which Sheetz announced is closing.
Located at the corner of College Avenue and Houserville Road, the store will officially shut its doors on Wednesday, according to a press release from Sheetz.
“While the decision to close a store is never easy, we are continually assessing the performance of our store locations and customer’s needs,” CEO Joe Sheetz said. “As a result of these reviews, we made the decision to close our store on College Avenue.”
While one State College location is closing, Sheetz seemed optimistic about the chain’s future in State College, particularly with a new location opening at 129 S. Pugh St., which was last occupied by nightclub Duo.
“We are focused on food and beverage growth and we are evaluating all our existing stores on their overall brand presence, physical capabilities and potential to accommodate our future business needs,” Sheetz said. “We are excited for the new era of Sheetz, which includes our newest concept, opening this fall in downtown State College.”
The employees of the College Ave. location will all keep their jobs, being retained and relocated to the other State College area locations.
The incoming Pugh Street location is a concept store for Sheetz, which will eschew the usual gas pumps for a food-only establishment. The store will include a beer cave and “every detail of the space will give customers a new way to enjoy Sheetz food offerings.”
