Election 2016: State House 76th District

CNET hosted candidates for the 2016 general election for interviews conducted by StateCollege.com editor Geoff Rushton. In the days leading up to the Nov. 8 election, we will be sharing the interviews with candidates for Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional DistrictPennsylvania Auditor General, and the 77th, 76th, 81st, and 171st State House Districts.

THE RACE
Pennsylvania State House of Representatives 76th District, which includes part of Centre County and all of Clinton County. In Centre County, the district represents Benner Township, Boggs Township, Burnside Township, Curtin Township, Haines Township, Howard, Howard Township, Liberty Township, Marion Township, Miles Township, Milesburg, Snow Shoe, Snow Shoe Township, Union Township and Unionville.

THE INCUMBENT
Democrat Mike Hanna of Lock Haven is seeking his 14th term representing the 76th district, having first been elected to the office in 1990. He has been House Democratic Whip since 2011. Prior to his election in 1990, Hanna practiced law for 10 years. He has a bachelor’s degree from Lock Haven University and a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Hanna ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

THE CHALLENGER
Republican Stephanie Borowicz of McElhattan is seeking office for the first time. She is a pastor’s wife and mother. Borowicz previously was an elementary school teacher and non-profit organization president. She has a bachelor’s degree from Vanguard University. Borowicz ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

THE ISSUES
In their CNET interviews, Hanna and Borowicz address steps to take on the heroin and opioid crisis; job creation; public education; income, corporate and natural gas taxes; state pension funding; state gun and drug laws; and bipartisan budgets.
