A local dog day care will be closing its doors next month.
Sporty Dog Daycare, 1510 Martin Street, will close on Aug. 24 after 11 years in business. The day care’s lease was not renewed by the building’s new owner, according to a post on the Sporty Dog Facebook page.
‘What makes Sporty Dog so unique is the convenience to town and the university,’ the post said. ‘After a lot of searching I can’t … find a location affordable to what I have now. It has been a true privilege to get to know all of you and your 4 legged family members. The next few weeks are going to tough, but I hope you will continue with me to the end.’
According to county records, the property at 1510 Martin Street was sold in September 2017 by David and Sandra Corneal to Martin Street Holdings LLC for for $5 million. The property also includes The North Club fitness center and Mountain Wind Martial Arts.
Julie Mikesell, a certified canine instructor and assistant trainer, opened Sporty Dog Daycare in 2007.
