More than two dozen artist participants in the Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition won awards this month from the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.
Winning artists were honored toward the end of the annual five-day festival, which concluded July 11. In excess of 300 artists overall participate in the festival’s Sidewalk Sale, which winds through downtown State College and the University Park campus.
The festival on Friday released a comprehensive list of the award winners, who together received more than $17,000 in prize money. The top prize, the Arete Best of Show Award, went to Wayne Werner, of Havre de Grace, Md., for his jewelry work.
He won $2,500.
Here’s a rundown of the other winners as identified by the festival:
- John C. Mason Award for Excellence in Jewelry Design: E. Douglas Wunder, of Kutztown
- Fine Arts Award: Mariko Swisher, of Lancaster
- Lautsch Family Award of Excellence: Joe Graham, of Jefferson, Ohio
- Awards of Excellence: Aaron Hequembourg, of Monticello, Ga.; Wesley Glebe and Christine Bailey, of State College; and Paul Shatz, of Charleston, S.C.
- Awards of Distinction: Donald Boudreau, of Hollywood, Fla.; Mary Jackson, of Johns Island, S.C.; Chris Plummer, of Alexandria, Ky.; and James Parker and Kris Parker, of Clarion
- Awards of Merit: Kim Lucci Elbualy, of Lewistown; Hiroshi Nakayama, of Worthington, Ma.; Archie Smith, of Mount Pleasant, N.C.; and Horace and Shawn Thomas, of Belton, Texas
- John and Sharon McCarthy Award of Merit: Patrick and Lori O’Neill, of Santa Rosa, Calif.
- Connections Clothing Award of Merit: Jeff Kleckner, of Bethlehem
- Barash Media Award of Merit: John Mowen, of Nevada City, Calif.
- Robert and Virginia Mountz Award of Merit: Sandi Garris, of State College
- Brown and Associates Award of Merit: Jupi Das, of Blue Bell
- McLanahan’s Downtown Market Award of Merit: Bert Beirne, of Flowery Branch, Ga.
- Kissinger Bigatel and Brower – Beth Kalenak Award of Merit: Peter Saenger, of Newark, Del.
- Brian C. White D.D.S. and Aaron T. Roan D.M.D. and Associates Award of Merit: Joel Hunnicutt, of Siler City, N.C.
- Frost and Conn, Inc., Booth of Distinction Award: Don McWhorter, of Carrollton, Ga.
The award winners were chosen by a group of five jurors. They were Sue Amendolara, of Edinboro; Cheryl Hargrove, of Washington, D.C.; Nate Larson, of Baltimore; Dale McNutt, of Pittsburgh; and Lisa Naples, of Doylestown.
Next year, the arts festival will celebrate its 45th year. It’ll be held from July 13 to July 17.
