ESPN will feature a revealing look at a familiar Penn State face next month.
Ali Krieger, former Nittany Lion soccer star and current member of Team USA, will appear in the altogether when ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue hits stands in July.
On Thursday, ESPN released a sneak peak of its interview and photo shoot entitled Under Ali Krieger’s Uniform. You can see some of the interview and video of Krieger, who appears without clothing, by clicking here.
“It’s important to show your vulnerabilities,” Krieger told ESPN. “I’m proud of my body, I’m proud of my sport, I’m proud of being a female athlete. Being naked is just another aspect of that. It’s real. It’s raw. It’s honest.”
Krieger racked up a ton of accolades as a standout midfielder and defender for Penn State from 2003-2006. A two-time All-American, Krieger earned co-defensive player of the year and was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy.
She was named team captain during her time with the Nittany Lions and helped lead the team to four consecutive Big Ten Championships.
The defender’s athletic prowess has helped lead team USA in this summer’s World Cup. Krieger has started all four games and played a tremendous amount of minutes. She is a key player in the American team’s strong, lock-down defense and is a key figure when it comes to the tough physical style of play the United States is known for.
She told ESPN, “I have to win, even if I’m just playing pingpong. If I lose, I get so pissed off and need a second. But I think it’s that way with a lot of people at this level — we are all super competitive.”
Team USA will need her competitive fire to stay lit as it looks to advance in the World Cup. Watch for Krieger in the USA’s next match this Friday versus China.
