A threat posted on a social media application has landed a former Penn State student behind bars.
Jong Shim was sentenced Friday to serve five days to 12 months in the Centre County Correctional Facility with a year of probation, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.
Shim, a former Penn State sophomore, was arrested in October when he posted a message to Yik Yak threatening to shoot people in the HUB.
“I am going to kill everyone in Penn State main on Monday,” the post said. “I got 5 beta mags of AR-15 and [I’ll] shoot everyone in the HUB at 12:00. This is a warning.”
With help from the FBI, State College police tracked Shim down and arrested him at his off-campus apartment on the night of October 12. At the time, he told police he was “surprised” they found him and that the threat was just a “prank.” No weapons were found in Shim’s residence.
Shim pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of making terroristic threats and disorderly conduct. Judge Thomas Kistler ordered him held on $100,000 bail in the Centre County Correctional Facility, where he’s been for over seven months.
“Threats of violence are never funny,” district attorney Stacy Parks Miller says. “Police can figure out who you are, even if you are online and think you are hidden, and the consequences are serious. This kind of behavior is not a joke.”
Shim is no longer a student at Penn State after going through the student conduct process, according to university spokesperson Lisa Powers.
