The Pennsylvania Game Commission said it is investigating and seeking the public’s help after two elk were illegally killed in Centre County.

The elk — a cow and her calf — were found dead in Snow Shoe Township, on the grounds of Sproul State Forest.

‘We believe the elk were most likely killed during the two week rifle deer season in November,’ Game Commission officials said in a Facebook post.

State Game Warden Mike Ondik has been investigating the deaths for several weeks. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Game Commission’s Northcentral Region Office at (570) 398-4744 or the Operation Game Thief Hotline at 1-888-PGC-8001.

Those providing information can remain confidential, according to the Game Commission.

Elk hunting in Pennsylvania is limited to a period in early November and only a small number of licenses are awarded by lottery on an annual basis.
