Residents of a State College home and a neighboring property were briefly evacuated following a gas leak Friday morning.

Alpha Fire Company Chief Jeff Martin said that shortly after 9 a.m. construction workers installing a fence at a house on the 100 block of Hartswick Avenue struck a gas line, causing the leak.

An odor of natural gas could be smelled around the College Heights neighborhood near Park Avenue.

The residents were home at the time and they, as well as a neighbor, were evacuated.

‘The fire department responded and checked both properties for gas build up,’ Martin said. ‘We got zero readings. We stayed here and monitored until Columbia [Gas of Pennsylvania] was able to mitigate the situation.’

Columbia Gas workers shut off the leak at about 10:10 a.m. Martin said the properties were safe and the owners were able to go back inside.
